Accessibility Statement

At Mermaid of Balkans, we are committed to ensuring digital accessibility for all visitors. We are continuously improving the user experience for everyone, regardless of their abilities. This site is created as part of a module in MA Web Design and Content Planning at Greenwich University, and there is a big emphasis on accessibility.

Standard compliance

We strive to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA. Our website is designed to be compatible with screen readers, keyboard navigation, and other assistive technologies.

First and foremost we have used semantic HTML and CSS for styling. We have also used JavaScript in the site for some elements. But if for any reason the CSS and JavaScript is not loading, or you have disabled them purposely in your browser we have made sure to have a fallback and to make content accessible.

Also having used semantic HTML with clear elements that include header, navigation, main and footer to structure the content of the site. That is helping screen readers to understand the content hierarchy. Every image in the site has a text alternative and the color contrast is sufficient.

Access keys

We have included a skip-to-content link at the top of each page to allow users to bypass repetitive navigation menus and go directly to main content. The access key to skip to content is “1” and to skip to navigation is “2”. For the user to activate the access key depends on the browser and its platform. You can find more information about this in MDN Web Docs article for access key.

To conclude with the accessibility statement we would say that making a site accessible for everyone is an ongoing effort. We are always reviewing and updating our website to ensure accessibility because we have a strong commitment to inclusive good user experience. If you find any current issues, you are more than welcomed to get in touch!
